Wellington has been New Zealand's capital since 1865. At the southern tip of the North Island, it is home to Parliament, the offices of Cabinet and the prime minister, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. Parliament and the seat of government moved from Auckland to Wellington in 1865.
