Wellington has been New Zealand’s capital since 1865. It is home to Parliament, the offices of Cabinet and the prime minister, and the country’s highest courts. Auckland, which served as the capital from 1841 to 1865, is now much more populous, which explains the frequent confusion. Its position near Cook Strait also gives the city an important transport role between New Zealand’s two main islands.
