The African savannah elephant is the largest living land animal. Males can reach several tonnes and travel great distances in search of water and food. In 2021, the IUCN assessed the two African species separately: the savannah elephant is classified “endangered” and the forest elephant, smaller and living mainly in the forests of central Africa, “critically endangered”. Both suffer in particular from poaching, habitat loss and fragmentation as well as conflicts with human activities. Using only “African elephant” masks this taxonomic distinction and two different levels of threat.
