The Amazon basin is the largest river basin in the world. It brings together the Amazon River and thousands of tributaries spread across several South American countries, including Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Bolivia. This network drains a large part of the Amazon forest and transports a greater volume of water to the Atlantic than any other river. The distinction between the basin and the river is important: the Amazon designates the main course, while the Amazon basin includes all the territories and watercourses that feed it.
