The Nazca geoglyphs were traced in the Peruvian desert between approximately 500 BCE and 500 CE. They represent lines, geometric figures, animals and plants visible from the surrounding hills as well as from the sky. Their exact function remains debated. Researchers have proposed ritual, processional, astronomical or water-related uses, but no single explanation accounts for the whole. The dry climate has favored their conservation. Presenting these plots as an established astronomical calendar therefore transforms one hypothesis among others into certainty.
