The Rumble in the Jungle took place on 30 October 1974 in Kinshasa, then the capital of Zaire and now in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Muhammad Ali faced George Foreman, the undefeated world champion and strong favourite. Many observers believed Foreman’s power would prevent the 32-year-old Ali from regaining the heavyweight title. Ali famously used a strategy later called the “rope-a-dope”, leaning on the ropes while Foreman spent energy throwing punches that Ali absorbed or deflected. In the eighth round, Ali attacked and knocked Foreman out. The victory restored his world heavyweight championship and became one of the most celebrated fights in boxing history.
