Igneous rocks form when molten rock cools and solidifies. Magma that cools slowly beneath Earth's surface produces intrusive igneous rocks, often with large visible crystals. Lava that cools at or near the surface produces extrusive igneous rocks, which generally have much smaller crystals. Granite is a familiar intrusive igneous rock, while basalt is a common extrusive example. The generic term “igneous rock” therefore covers both settings; “intrusive” applies only to underground solidification.
