FORTRAN was developed in the 1950s by an IBM team led by John Backus. Its name comes from “Formula Translation” and it was intended to facilitate scientific and technical calculation without writing directly in machine language or assembly language. The first compiler released in 1957 produced code that was sufficiently efficient to convince many programmers. FORTRAN thus became one of the first widely used high-level languages and is still present in intensive computing. However, it was not the very first high-level language imagined: Plankalkül, Short Code and other earlier systems precede its diffusion.
