The white bellbird lives in forests of northern South America, including the Guianas and the northern Amazon region. The male produces an exceptionally loud, metallic-sounding mating call. Measurements reported in 2019 reached roughly 125 decibels at close range, making it the loudest bird call measured in that study and surpassing the screaming piha. The bird is not endemic to Lord Howe Island in Australia, as the previous anecdote claimed. Its extreme volume is especially striking because males may call near females during courtship, although they turn away before producing the loudest part of the display.
