The German flag consists of three horizontal bands of equal width: black at the top, red in the center and gold at the bottom. These colors were notably associated with the German liberal and national movements of the 19th century, then taken up by the Weimar Republic. They again became the official colors of West Germany in 1949 and of reunified Germany in 1990. The horizontal arrangement distinguishes it from the Belgian flag, which also uses black, yellow and red, but in the form of three vertical stripes.
