Along with that of the Vatican, it is one of the rare national flags in a square shape, even if a rectangular version is used in certain maritime contexts. The Red Cross emblem adopts reversed colors: a red cross on a white background. This choice, made in the 19th century, pays homage to Switzerland, a country associated with the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
