David Livingstone traveled across large areas of southern and central Africa in the 19th century. He mapped rivers, crossed the continent from west to east and made known in Europe the falls to which he gave the name Victoria. During the last years of his life, he sought to identify the sources of the Nile, but confused certain hydrographic networks and did not resolve the question. He died in 1873 in what is now Zambia. His surveys nevertheless contributed to European geographical knowledge of the interior of the continent, while his travels took place in territories already known and traveled by their inhabitants.
