Spathiphyllum, or moonflower, was among the plants tested in NASA experiments on the removal of certain volatile organic compounds in closed chambers. Under these controlled conditions, the leaves, roots and microorganisms in the substrate could absorb or transform part of the contaminants. A real room, however, is much larger, ventilated and continually exposed to new sources. Studies show that it would take an unrealistic number of plants to achieve an effect comparable to normal ventilation. The spathiphyllum remains a popular ornamental plant, but should not be presented as a sufficient air purifier for a home.
