Māori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, or Aotearoa. Their culture includes a rich oral tradition, genealogies, songs, sculpture, weaving and ceremonial practices. The haka is a collective performance combining voice, gestures, facial expressions, posture and rhythm. Some haka were associated with preparation for combat or challenge, but many serve to welcome, celebrate, pay homage, express mourning or affirm a common identity. The international popularity of the New Zealand rugby team's haka should therefore not reduce this diverse tradition to a simple “war dance”.
