Published in 1942, “L’Étranger” tells the story of Meursault, an Algerian employee whose detachment from social conventions disconcerts those around him. After killing a man on a beach, he is judged as much for his behavior at his mother's funeral as for his crime. The novel explores the absurd, the gap between the human need for meaning and the indifference of the world, as well as social judgment. It appeared the same year as the essay “The Myth of Sisyphus”. Camus is often compared to existentialism, but he refused this label and developed his own thinking of the absurd.
