The shakuhachi is a Japanese vertical flute traditionally made of bamboo. Its name refers to a traditional length of a shaku and eight sun, although the instrument comes in several sizes. It is associated with different repertoires, including solo pieces and practices linked to monks of the Fuke school during the Edo period. Its sound strongly depends on the breath, the embouchure angle and variations in pitch. The shō, mouth organ, and the ryūteki, gagaku flute, are also Japanese wind instruments; only the “vertical bamboo flute” precision makes the answer unique.
