Nicéphore Niépce produced one of the oldest surviving permanent photographs in the 1820s, obtained after a very long exposure. He then joined forces with Louis Daguerre to improve their processes. After Niépce's death, Daguerre continued his research and in 1839 presented the daguerreotype, a process producing a very detailed image on a metal plate. The French government disseminated the principle and photography developed rapidly. Daguerre therefore plays a major role in its history, but simply qualifying him as a sole inventor erases Niépce's previous work and the parallel contributions of other experimenters.
