Albert Einstein published the theory of special relativity in 1905. It describes the physics of inertial frames of reference, affirms the invariance of the speed of light and leads to a new relationship between space and time. The famous equivalence between mass and energy, summarized by E = mc², fits into this framework. Einstein completed general relativity in 1915, which describes gravitation as a curvature of space-time produced by matter and energy. The two theories are related but distinct. Attributing gravity to the special relativity of 1905 therefore confuses two fundamental stages of his work.
