Jon Fosse, Norwegian writer born in 1959, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2023. Playwright, novelist, poet and essayist, he writes in Nynorsk, one of the two official written forms of Norwegian. His work is characterized by refined language, repetitions, silences and attention to experiences that are difficult to express. His plays are performed in many countries and his vast “Septology” is among his major novels. Margaret Atwood, Canadian author of “The Handmaid’s Tale”, has received numerous distinctions, but not the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature.
