The vaquita is a small porpoise endemic to the northern Gulf of California, Mexico. Recognizable by the dark markings around the eyes and mouth, it is sometimes nicknamed “sea panda”. Accidental catches in gillnets, particularly those used illegally to fish for totoaba, have caused the collapse of its population. Recent observation campaigns have only detected around ten individuals, but an exact number is difficult to establish for a rare and discreet animal.
