The flag of the Dominican Republic is divided into four red and blue rectangles by a large white cross. The colors are arranged alternately and the national coat of arms appears in the center of the cross. Adopted in the 19th century, the flag is closely linked to the country's independence. The four colored areas are not triangles: their sides follow the edges of the pavilion and the branches of the cross. This geometry allows it to be distinguished from the Jamaican flag, effectively organized around four triangles separated by a golden saltire.
