Cubism developed at the beginning of the 20th century around Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The artists fragmented objects, simplified volumes into geometric shapes and sometimes combined several points of view in the same image. In its analytical phase, the palette is often reduced to browns, grays and ochres; bright colors are therefore not its main distinctive feature. Fauvism, represented in particular by Henri Matisse and André Derain, is on the contrary famous for its intense and non-naturalistic colors. The geometric fragmentation and multiplicity of points of view make it possible to clearly distinguish cubism from other options.
