The ancestral Puebloans built vast settlements, large houses and stone villages in the Southwestern United States. Chaco Canyon, in what is now New Mexico, and the rock dwellings of Mesa Verde, Colorado, are among their most famous sites. These communities developed exchange networks, agricultural techniques adapted to an arid climate and elaborate architecture. Several current Pueblo peoples maintain cultural and historical ties with these places. The Navajo have a distinct history and culture; Attributing the construction of these ancient cities to them was therefore incorrect.
