Which building solution can generate electricity while also supporting vegetation and urban biodiversity?
Correct answer A facade combining vegetation and photovoltaic panels
Fact
Did you know?
A green facade can improve shading, limit certain overheating and provide habitats or resources for urban species. However, it does not produce electricity by itself. To combine biodiversity and clean energy, a building can combine plants with photovoltaic panels integrated into the facade or roof. The design must then take into account sunshine, irrigation, maintenance, weight and interactions between plants and modules. The benefits strongly depend on the climate and the project. Talking about a “living facade” without mentioning an energy production system was therefore misleading.
