Machu Picchu is an Inca settlement built in the 15th century on a ridge in the Peruvian Andes. In 1911, Hiram Bingham traveled to the region in search of Inca sites. Locals, including Melchor Arteaga, showed him the way, and a young boy led him to the ruins, already known and partly used by local families. Bingham then organized research and publications that brought international attention to the site. His expedition therefore played an important role in its worldwide diffusion, but it does not constitute a “rediscovery” in the literal sense. This nuance recognizes the continuing knowledge of the place by the surrounding populations.
