The Battle of Adrianople took place in 378 near present-day Edirne, Turkey. A Roman army led by Emperor Valens confronted Gothic groups who had entered the Empire after fleeing the Huns. The Romans suffered a heavy defeat and Valens was killed. The event revealed serious military and political weaknesses and modified relations between the Empire and the federated populations. It was an important turning point in Late Antiquity, but the Eastern Roman Empire survived for more than a millennium. The “decline of Rome” is a complex process and cannot be dated to the start of a single battle.
