Thomas Edison did not create the first incandescent electric lamp. Several inventors had obtained light by heating a filament, and Joseph Swan at the same time developed a practical lamp in the United Kingdom. In the late 1870s, Edison's laboratory team improved the lifespan of the filaments and, above all, designed a complete commercial system including generators, cables, switches and electricity distribution. The Pearl Street power station, opened in New York in 1882, illustrated this integrated approach. Edison therefore played a major role in the diffusion of electric lighting, but the expression “sole inventor of the light bulb” excessively simplifies the story.
