Tracey Emin first exhibited “My Bed” in 1998. The installation presents her own unmade bed surrounded by personal objects and debris, turning an intensely private setting into a public artwork. Emin connected the work to a difficult period in her life, and critics discussed it in relation to depression, intimacy, vulnerability and self-representation. It was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1999 and provoked a broad debate about what materials and experiences could constitute contemporary art. The work became one of the best-known examples of the confessional approach associated with Emin and some of the Young British Artists.
