Chlorophyll is a molecular pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants and algae as well as in certain photosynthetic bacteria. It mainly absorbs red and blue light and reflects green more, which explains the color of many leaves. The captured energy fuels the first stages of photosynthesis, a process which transforms light energy into chemical energy. Chlorophyll contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and a magnesium atom. It is therefore not a chemical element of the periodic table, but a family of complex pigments.
