Operation Uranus was the major Soviet counter-offensive launched on November 19, 1942 during the Battle of Stalingrad. Instead of directly attacking the German forces in the city, the Red Army struck the flanks held mainly by less well-equipped Romanian troops. The two branches of the offensive joined near Kalach and surrounded the German 6th Army and other Axis units. The encirclement led to the capitulation of February 1943. “Uranus” was therefore not the code name of the entire Battle of Stalingrad, which began several months earlier, but that of the decisive Soviet encirclement operation.
