Dmitri Mendeleev published in 1869 a classification of elements organized according to the repetition of their chemical properties. He deliberately left boxes empty when no known element was suitable and predicted the properties of several substances yet to be discovered. Gallium was identified in 1875, scandium in 1879 and germanium in 1886, all during Mendeleev's lifetime, with characteristics close to his predictions. The modern table is ordered by atomic number, a notion established later thanks to the work of Henry Moseley. The success of Mendeleev's contemporary predictions contributed greatly to the acceptance of the periodic law.
