Wangari Maathai launched the Green Belt Movement in Kenya in 1977 to address deforestation and problems affecting rural communities. The movement mobilised women in particular to plant trees, protect soils and improve access to firewood, water and local resources. Her work connected environmental protection with women’s rights, democracy and peace. In 2004 Maathai became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
