Mount Elbrus belongs to the Greater Caucasus and rises to 5,642 meters. This dormant volcano is located in Russia, in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, north of the border with Georgia. It is generally considered the highest peak in Europe when the boundary between Europe and Asia is placed along the Caucasus watershed. Some classifications based on another border tend to retain Mont Blanc. To say that Elbrus is “between Russia and Georgia” is imprecise: the summit is entirely in Russian territory.
