Fact

Did you know?

Jonas Salk and his University of Pittsburgh team developed a vaccine using inactivated polioviruses. A huge field trial took place in 1954 among children known as the “Polio Pioneers”. On 12 April 1955 the results announced that the vaccine was safe, effective and potent. Given by injection, it helped drive a major decline in poliomyelitis cases. Albert Sabin later developed an oral vaccine using weakened live virus, which was easier to distribute in mass campaigns. The two approaches played complementary roles in the worldwide effort against the disease.
