The Mayans created a sophisticated writing system consisting of glyphs, which could represent words or syllables. This system made it possible to accurately record historical events, religious rituals, as well as astronomical and mathematical knowledge. Mayan glyphs were engraved on steles, ceramics and inscribed in codices, folding books made of bark paper. Although many of these precious codices were lost or destroyed after the Spanish conquest, the work of modern scholars has deciphered much of this writing, opening a fascinating window into Mayan civilization.
