In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick published a model of the double helix structure of DNA. Their proposal was based on chemical rules established by Erwin Chargaff and on X-ray diffraction data obtained at King's College London. Rosalind Franklin notably produced the famous photograph 51 and carried out essential analyses of the shape and dimensions of DNA; Maurice Wilkins also contributed to the research. Watson, Crick and Wilkins received the Nobel Prize in 1962, Franklin having died in 1958. Presenting the discovery as the work of only two people therefore erases decisive scientific contributions.
