Hippocrates of Kos lived in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE and is traditionally nicknamed “the father of medicine”. The “Hippocratic Corpus”, a set of texts written by several authors, seeks to explain diseases by natural causes and insists on observation of the patient. The Hippocratic Oath has influenced the history of medical ethics, although versions spoken today differ from the ancient text. To speak of the father of “modern medicine” would be anachronistic: scientific anatomy, microbial theory, clinical trials and contemporary technologies developed much later thanks to numerous researchers.
