Chuck Berry was one of the great architects of rock 'n' roll in the 1950s. His songs combined electric guitar riffs, rhythms from blues and rhythm and blues, as well as lyrics about youth, cars and everyday life. “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Johnny B. Goode” influenced generations of bands and guitarists. Berry did not invent the electric guitar and was not the first to promote it: blues and rhythm and blues musicians had already done so. He nevertheless contributed powerfully to popularizing the guitar as the central voice of rock.
