Elvis Presley was instrumental in popularizing rock 'n' roll to a wide audience in the 1950s. His performance, appearance and stage movements aroused both enthusiasm and controversy. He first appeared on American national television in 1956 on the Dorsey brothers' show, where he was filmed in full length. The restrictive framing that became famous occurred later, during his third appearance on the "Ed Sullivan Show" on January 6, 1957: the cameras showed him mostly above the waist. This episode further strengthened his provocative image.
