Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo in May 1946 as a small electronics company with about twenty employees. Ibuka contributed engineering expertise, while Morita played a major part in business strategy and the company’s international outlook. The business adopted the name Sony in 1958, choosing a short word designed to be easily recognised across languages. It later expanded through consumer audio and electronic products sold around the world.
